Computer Syndrome: How to avoid it?

Computer Syndrome: How to avoid it? Today, it’s impossible to imagine an office job without a computer. More than two-thirds of American adults acknowledge using a computer at work, with over 80% stating that computers are essential for their professions. These devices enhance connectivity, speed up work, provide access to various tools, save office supplies, and boost productivity by facilitating work across different environments, whether in the office, at home, or while traveling.
All these advantages contribute to millions of people spending hours on a digital screen. However, the widespread exposure to screens has a downside: It leads to the emergence of Computer Vision Syndrome. It refers to the strain exerted on the eyes from prolonged digital screen use, causing eye fatigue and general discomfort.
The most common symptoms of this condition include:

  • Blurry vision
  • Eye fatigue
  • Dry eyes
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Headaches
  • Neck and shoulder pain

To prevent it, specialists recommend placing the computer screen about 15 to 20 inches away from the eyes, with the center of the screen positioned 5 inches below eye level. The office should be illuminated with soft, preferably natural light, and anti-glare screens should be used.
Physically, it’s advised to take a break every 15 minutes after two hours of computer use and focus the eyes on a distant point for 20 seconds every 20 minutes of screen time.
It’s important to note that Computer Vision Syndrome is easily diagnosable through an eye exam. Some individuals may believe they have normal vision, but an optometrist may recommend glasses with a mild prescription to reduce visual stress after an exam. Therefore, if you work with a computer, you should get an eye exam annually. Having vision insurance can save you on expenses and help maintain your visual health.
